Is Improvement Coming for the Manufacturing Economy?

The latest U.S. Manufacturing Technology Orders (USMTO) report showed a gain in orders for September over the previous month – but still a serious lag behind order levels at the same point in 2014. With manufacturing still fighting through the challenges of a stronger dollar and lower energy prices, when will things improve?

AMT VP-Strategic Analytics Pat McGibbon says it’s likely we’ll see market softness for a while. But it’s important to note that 2014 was one of the top years ever for manufacturing technology orders, meaning that any comparison to that year is unlikely to look favorable. While we’re unlikely to see a real turnaround until at least after the 1st quarter of 2016, lots of investment is still happening from manufacturers in automotive, aerospace, and medical. You can read the latest USMTO release here, and watch this video for McGibbon’s full commentary.
