Typically, when you think of characterizations of transgender characters in film, you most often come up with a list of tragedies. Indeed, both of those movies, being inspired by true stories, tend to go to darker places, leaving the viewer with an idea of life as a transgender individual as a series of one hellish obstacle after another in the journey towards self-actualization; if those stories are to be believed, that journey usually meets a horrifyingly tragic ending. While much can be said about the writing and directing of Schaeffer, the positive response to the movie is, in no small part, due to the performance by first time actress, Michelle Hendley. I recently had the chance to speak with Hendley about her experiences on the film and her new role as a sort of spokesperson for the transgender community, as well as her future ambitions as an actress.

If you help with the funding for this project, you'll be helping me to display the transgender community in a positive light, which is albeit different to what has happened in the movie world in recent times. In the past, trans icons have been poorly portrayed in the movie, and with negative outcomes for the trans characters.

What initially started out as a social-politicial movie screenplay challenging societal values has been turned into a dream to get a positive movie out there.

Trans characters in movies have awful stereotypes attached to them, such as NSFW workers, perverts and even just devianted freaks - which is not what they are. Being a trans activist and friends with a whole community full of trans people, either fully transitioned or just beginning their journey, it breaks my heart to see them portrayed so poorly in the media. My short movie is hopefully going to be revolutionary for the people of the trans community and even just the activists.

Every time a new film or television project about transgender people comes about, it gets exponentially more frustrating to have the same conversations about how our stories should be told. Therein lies the real truth of our cultural relationship to cisgender people: to many of those embedded in the dominant culture, transgender stories do not, on a fundamental level, belong to trans people. This can be true even when the ostensible protagonist or the focal point of a documentary is a transgender person played by same. Such is the tragedy of Boy Meets Girl.

If you help with the funding for this project, you'll be helping me to display the transgender community in a positive light, which is albeit different to what has happened in the movie world in recent times. We had been asked to respond to the film from our perspectives as trans community members. The panel did not go as planned, so we decided to write this article together as a forum to say what we would have liked to say then about the film. Boy Meets Girl is a sentimental small-town romantic comedy featuring a trans woman character, Ricky Michelle Hendley. In the realm of feature-length films by cisgender filmmakers that include trans characters, Boy Meets Girl is way better than it could be. It is basically sympathetic, avoids some of the most offensive tropes about trans women, and portrays the trans character as a whole person defined by more than her transition.

GIRL MEETS BOY - A TRANS FRIENDLY SHORT FILM

Helen Morales. The picture of classical antiquity most of us learned in school is framed in certain ways -- glossing over misogyny while omitting the seeds of feminist resistance. Many of today's harmful practices, like school dress codes, exploitation of the environment, and rape culture, have their roots in the ancient world. But in Antigone Rising , classicist Helen Morales reminds us that the myths have subversive power because they are told -- and read -- in different ways. Through these stories, whether it's Antigone's courageous stand against tyranny or the indestructible Caeneus, who inspires trans and gender queer people today, Morales uncovers hidden truths about solidarity, empowerment, and catharsis. Antigone Rising offers a fresh understanding of the stories we take for granted, showing how we can reclaim them to challenge the status quo, spark resistance, and rail against unjust regimes. She is on the editorial board of Eidolon , the popular online journal dedicated to antiquity and feminism. She lives with her family in Santa Barbara.
