She weaves wit and humour throughout her books and she has a way of making you love her characters. Ash was badly injured by a cannon accident Problem is he wants to send who ever he marries away once they are with child. His scars are more than physical This book is well below the standard Tessa Dare has set for herself as a top romance author.

I found I had to force myself to read it, when usually I devour her books quickly. For starters, it was too long, and the story was insipid in places. My biggest complaint is that the humour was verging on cornball. Now, Ms. Dare usually has some pretty well written humour to lighten up the sensuality of her books, and sometimes it's a bit slapstick, but this wasn't that funny, it was just plain stupid and unrealistic.

Top it off with sensual scenes that were a bit tired and sounded like they'd been rehashed, and the book was just okay. This experience won't stop me from reading Tessa Dare books, as she's one of my favourite Regency romance authors.

A surprising plot manages to work perfectly for Emma and Ash - the Duke. But what a difficult time from a sudden marriage with too many rules from Ash, and a few from Emma.

The two of them were so tentative with each other in their marriage at first, totally charming me! Great characters, wonderful plot twists, and eventually a perfect happy ending. Highly recommended. I love this story. Humour and romance mixed into a retelling of my favorite fairytale. The heroine is strong-minded and determined to wrangle the hero back into living life again. He is just as determined to hide his hideous appearance from the world. I was drawn in from the first line and could hardly set the story down.

I've just found a new favorite author. Great story. Love the witty banter between the characters, so much so I had a hard time putting the book down. Definitely worth the read and I can't wait for the next in series. I would have loved to see a bit longer epilogue or once than took place a little later in time than the events in the book.

I am not going to give any spoilers, but this is such a good book!!! Look for the Dr. Seuss moment! So fun. I laughed and cried and had a lot of fun with this one. I have a few books that i like to re-read often and this is going on the list! This is my first book from this author and i loved it! It is a touching story that seems inspired by Beauty and the Beast. Great chemistry between the 2 main characters.

Humorous, sexy with a witty cast of secondary characters. Eagerly awaiting the story about the anonymous man from the bookstore! I really enjoyed reading it - so What a great book! I really enjoyed reading it - so many funny and intelligent and noteworthy exchanges between the two main characters. Excellent writing. See all reviews from Canada. Top international reviews.

I'm a huge fan of Tessa Dare. I've read most of her books and was really excited to get my hands on this. One of her earlier novels, When a Scot Ties the Knot, is one of my all-time favourites and this story is written in a similar style, with non-stop funny banter between the characters.

Having said that, after reading several historical novels back-to-back I did have trouble getting into it at first. The way the protagonists talk to each other is very 21st century and not remotely the way a 19th century duke and seamstress would speak to anyone of their era, let each other - they would probably never even meet.

When the Duke of Ashbury returns from the war horribly scarred "Faulty rocket at Waterloo. You have precisely three seconds to move past it. This saves me so much effort. She thinks she might even grow to love the Duke, and is hoping for a real marriage, but the Duke has a few rules There are two things about this novel that make it outstanding: the cracking dialogue and the brilliant characters - particularly the hero, Ash.

I was about halfway through the story when the penny dropped. Ash is basically Deadpool - manically cracking irreverent jokes to hide his pain, both mental and physical. Ash had once been an extremely handsome man, now he considers himself to be a monster who frightens small children.

It's not the only superhero reference. Ash's relationship with his butler is very Bruce Wayne and Alfred 'Batman' , the encounter with Trevor the teenage boy who wants to be the sidekick of the 'Monster of Mayfair' reminded me of 'The Incredibles', and then there's that very steamy kiss in the pouring rain But it you love witty, warm-hearted romantic comedy, with characters that leap off the page demanding your attention, you'll love it.

This was definitely a five-star read for me. Thank you for your feedback. Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again. Emma works as a streamstress and walks Ash is the Duke and feels he looks like a Monster due to an injury he suffered whilst at war! To ensure his estate is safe when something happens to him he needs an heir, and with never leaving his house, he sees this down and out streamstress as the way forward!

When Ash propositions Emma, she takes her money and storms out the house, back to the life in the shop. Of course, she would be silly to not accept his offer, so signs the papers and married the Duke. Emma refuses to allow Ash to be mean and hurtful to her, and gives as good as she gets. There are so many detailed reviews that I will just say - read it and enjoy it. I discard many books in this genre because they are historically inaccurate, too modern in manner and mannerisms, in language, or a rehash of plots that have been done to death.

I read a Tessa Dare book some time ago and although I quite enjoyed it, I didn't like the aspects mentioned above, so I haven't read anything else by her. However, this book had such rave reviews that I bought it - and it was a funny, genuinely witty, warm and uplifting read. The content has some of the elements I don't like, as above, and the plot is certainly not a new one - the physically and mentally scarred war veteran being saved by the love of a good woman has been done again and again.

That aside, I laughed out loud, rooted for the couple, loved their banter, especially the heroine's teasing of her stiff, starchy husband and the relationship with their staff, and just simply enjoyed this light, funny and uplifting book, and just set aside my usual reservations. For others like me, who might not want to read something which is not true to the period, I would say do try it and read it without reservations! Would I read other books by this author?
