Best work clothes for 40 year old woman
The day that I realized I would spend most of my adult life in workwear is the same day I found myself sweating, rolling bags of ill-fitting blouses, scratchy wool skirts, and too-tight blazers into a donation bin. If you aren't strategic in picking out workwear you actually like, then an alarming percentage of your closet will one day be drab, unflattering, and uncomfortable. Thankfully, there is no shortage of great places to find the kind of workwear that you'll actually want to wear — the kind that feels and looks good, but also makes you more comfortable at your desk and more confident in your day-to-day life. I asked the women on the Insider Picks team to divulge the stores they personally shop at, and what they buy. We see and test hundreds of products every year, which makes us extremely critical shoppers — especially where our own small closets are concerned. Below, we share some of our favorite places to buy women's workwear and a few tips and tricks about what to buy from each brand.SEE VIDEO BY TOPIC: Work outfit ideas for women over 40 – formal work wear for women over 40

40 Best Fashion Brands for Women Over 40
Feel free to drop down to the photo of the navy maxi-dress to skip directly to the 20 guidelines. Personally, I find that there are several advantages to dressing in your 40s: I think a woman older than 40 wears bolder jewelry better than a younger woman and I think that a woman in her 40s and beyond can wear clothing with more panache IF she has settled into her style and gotten comfortable in her own skin.
Each of these women OWNS her post look! Upon reflection, I think the reason why it is so hard to know what the fashion answers are in the early s, particularly for women from about 40—55, is that this group has several things intersecting at this point in time that are creating uncertainty but also opportunity.
Even so, the harsh reality is that the female body for almost every woman is changing in her 40s. For the lucky, the ones who religiously wore sunscreen, the ones who exercised vigilantly, the ones blessed with great DNA, the ones with exceptionally youthful personas, the ones with atypical confidence who are carefree about fashion, or those with a combination of all of the above, the fashion choices available are fairly wide.
For many women over 40, though, there is uncertainty, hesitancy, and confusion about what fashion means to her at this point in her life. What are the rules? While there are many shared concerns by almost all women in the 40—55 age range, I believe that there is also a fair amount of variation among women in that age range. I think many over women are worried about the length of skirts and dresses, amount of cleavage and skin in general, and looking too young overall.
On the other hand, there is also anxiety about looking too matronly and prematurely aging oneself. As a woman ages, there are a larger number of factors that come together with much more importance to create the opportunity for fashion successes or missteps.
Due to the number of factors, though, easy and obvious fashion choices are often hard to come by. Let me discuss some specific choices in my wardrobe to demonstrate how various factors impact my decision-making:. I own what is technically a denim mini-skirt but definitely not a micro-mini.
In fact, I wore it a week or two ago and got complimented on it. How do I pull this off? I am not uber-svelte, but I have always worked out and am blessed with decent looking calves, knees, and quads. Good DNA luck and exercise my own effort allows me this option. That is only part of the equation, though.
The following considerations are equally important and apply to ANY decision a woman over should be thinking about regarding her fashion purchases. A skirt like that would look perfectly good on almost any teenage or something girl. I am envious of taller women and women with narrow thighs and hips! I have a friend who is heavier than I am, but looks gorgeous in pants! My point? There really are so many factors that go into what might work for one person versus another!
I think a tall woman can pull off a loose spaghetti strap A-line dress with the right fabric in a way that elevates what should be a straight-forward boho-inspired look into something more chic. On me, it almost always looks frumpy, disheveled, and adds about 20 pounds to my frame. This is precisely why having lots of strict rules for this age group is tricky! I hope that you have had the opportunity to read my preceding article about identifying your fashion style.
If not, please consider doing so. How can I feel confident, beautiful, and stylish while avoiding being too youthful or too matronly? In the winter, I wear some really cool flesh colored ones with a funky but subtle pattern or black opaque hose on our coldest days. No micro-minis , but shorter skirts, shorts, or dresses might be an option.
Longer shorts are fine, too, of course. Skip flimsy fabric. An otherwise pretty outfit will come off as shoddy if the fabric looks cheap. Look for cuts that work on your body rather than what is trendy. A halter style is a great alternative over strapless if you want to be more covered up but still sexy. Strapless plus very short must be left for the under and, really, under 30 set.
If you wear a maxi skirt, make sure the top is more fitted or consider a cool tank top. If you can pull it off, wear a deep V-neck top or dress. The androgynous, structured, minimalist style of Tilda Swinton is a great example of being very covered up yet tres chic!
Fit and tailoring are key to the success of that look. Inspect your clothes! Invest in a sweater shaver to keep your cashmere or wool sweaters beautiful.
Throw out t-shirts, belts, or other clothes that have signs of wear. You should be equally concerned about being too long, too frumpy, too relaxed. Those things will needlessly age you. Be strategic with ruffles, bows, and glitter. I have so many thoughts on this one that I am going to write an entire story on how to handle whimsy and sparkle so that it stays on the right side of the line of looking playful and even chic versus looking immature.
Balance out an outfit with simple lines or one solid-colored piece for example, your pant or jeans that allows the statement to stand out instead of competing with the rest of your outfit. No schlubby purses. You will immediately downgrade your whole look. Be mindful of your shoes. I love comfort! Buy wedges, beautiful sandals, or boots. Of course, go all out if you are able to wear any type of heel!
But do not overlook your shoes when considering your overall appearance. No matter how comfortable, throw out your shoes when they look too worn or dated. Consider buying a stylish hat or two. I can throw on a cute dress and shoes, then toss the hat on. Jeans, black top, and cool black boots plus the hat below. The key is a good brim. Banana Republic often has some very reasonably priced picks. And for something truly special and decadent, check out the amazing Elmira Exclusive Hats.
Try everything on before committing. I have been on the fence about things and ended up loving them. Our bodies look different now, but sometimes we can embrace the change. We can settle into our imperfections and see clothing in a new way. Remain open-minded. Remember that new fashion opportunities exist. Step away. Save that money and use it towards something else that is worthy of you. Invest in better pieces.

Another quick post from me today as I reach the end of a week that has been busier than most. As I mentioned in my last post, we had to deliver a pitch for a new account on Wednesday. It was a serious investment but it has been worth it because it always feels ultra-luxe. I think it was partly because the full body expanse of black made me feel a bit like a Greek widow and also because leopard print, although very stylish for other occasions, lacks gravitas.
