Edwyn Collins — Never Met A Girl Like You Before (ver 2) Tab
By Craig McLean. He and his wife and manager, Grace Maxwell, had been trying to remember how long they were filmed for a new documentary about the past decade of the life of Edwyn, Always entertaining, always whipsmart, his devilish glint as sharp as his quiff was high.
A fantastic pop star, and a great man. And always by his side, Grace — his cheerful, cheering, redoubtable, indomitable wife. Orange Juice: still fresh after all these years. Edwyn Collins: My heroes and heroines. Edwyn Collins: Losing Sleep. In February Edwyn suffered a cerebral haemorrhage. Five days later he suffered another haemorrhage. Later on, having had a panel of skull bone removed, he would contract the superbug MRSA.
What began that Sunday night — in between the latest Antiques Roadshow and Edwyn boiling potatoes for dinner for himself, Grace and their son William — upended all their lives. Of course it did. After suffering two catastrophic bleeds in his brain, Edwyn almost died.
But he clung on, and Grace clung on right beside him. Edwyn was in a coma for 10 days, then spent six months in hospital, recovering, recovering, slowly, slowly.
His right hand remains clenched in a fist in his lap, his legs callipered by a speedy but shuffling gait. And his mind remains clouded by aphasia. Collins — famed for his lyrical bite, melodic agility and conversational wit — has had to relearn how to read, write, speak, walk, the lot. This journey, from onwards, is the subject of the new documentary. Well, it tells some of the story.
Clearly it could never fully chronicle the endless weeks in hospital beds; the countless hours over many years with physical, speech and other therapists; the bleak wee-hours where, one can barely imagine, the couple wondered how on earth they would get through this. Friends and peers such as Roddy Frame, Franz Ferdinand and the Proclaimers rallied round, a mark of the respect accorded this legendary and well-liked man.
Now, as we drink coffee in the living room of their cosy home — the house that the worldwide smash A Girl Like You bought — Grace and Edwyn are trying to recall how the documentary project began.
She does this as they entertain guests. She does this as the couple play guitar together, her strumming the strings, him picking out the chords with his left hand. A lifelong drawing and wildlife enthusiast, Edwyn still sketches, having relearnt how to wield a pencil with his left hand, yet another example of his dogged refusal to submit to neurological and physical challenges.
On the top page of his pad is his latest creation: a vivid red kite. The sketching became part of his therapy, and of his business: in the online shop of his website you can buy prints, plectrums, beer mats, postcards and Christmas cards bearing his leaping salmon, golden eagles and stately deer. This is true. The Possibilities Are Endless is a beautiful, mesmerising, minute film. There are images of hills and beaches, of sky and cliffs, of youngsters playing football and fishermen plying the seas.
Whenever they can, the couple escape to that remote coastal community and rugged landscape. His brows crease as he focuses on the words and thoughts. Twenty years old. So quite young really, at our time of lives! And, the documentaries filmed for ages — for example, Helmsdale they came from [sic]. And, eh, to take a look. And London. That is exactly how Edwyn speaks: sometimes faltering, sometimes jumbled. Grace nods in agreement, crediting Hall and Lovelace with a boldness and confidence from the off.
Voice only. Just listening to him, talking to him. I ask: did you enjoy that, Edwyn? James and Ed are lovely people. Ed and James are silent as I talk through it. And ponderous. And it takes a long time to do. And suddenly I got-get a thought. And my thoughts come. Grace tells me that she would sometimes listen to their interviews just outside the door. Kind of shaky. The first time… that… my words are not right. But gradually the feeling… flows. And when we listened to them we found it relaxing and tranquil.
You were lulled into it. This mood — relaxed, lulling, impressionistic — duly became the mood of the film. Which was refreshing, because sometimes, she admits with a laugh, old rock-star habits die hard.
Later, doing interviews, he would recount this, well, endlessly. And I was quite glad when it stopped. The torment of The Possibilities Are Endless will never end. It is not a ballad-of-a-survivor documentary, no misery-lit adaptation. He would only talk about his inspirations: where he wanted to go, the end-goal. Edwyn is such an inspiring figure, always trying to strive forward.
And the film had to have that. Indeed, Collins is as active as ever. He toured Australia earlier this year. And, more immediately, next month he and Grace will be heading to Austin, Texas. And Collins is still a singer. The words might occasionally fail him, but it seems like the melody, and his singing voice, never do. Does the title refer to the difficulty of his recovery process? The verse and chorus. Then she shrugs, surprised, pleasantly so.
The couple are in the process of packing up in London and relocating to Helmsdale. But for example, London, I walk to the studio I suppose. Not every day, but sometimes. And he just disappeared. I hope! So the rule is: do not cross this road unless you hear perfect silence. Edwyn nods again. Something from long ago. I think it was Edwyn has things to do. Before I leave this remarkable couple — as comfortable with the niggles as they are with the triumphs — I wonder: almost a decade after his strokes, even in light of his remarkable comeback and fightback, are there still things Edwyn wants to improve?
Is that right, Craig? He said, [gruff voice] 'You must work, boy. You must work, boy. You must work, boy! Follow TeleMusicNews. Terms and Conditions. Style Book. Weather Forecast. Despite suffering from two catastrophic haemorrhages in , the post-punk pioneer is back making music as good as anything he produced before. He talks to writer Jeremy Allen about his road to recovery, Twitter, and the perils of wetting yourself in front of supermodels. How do you measure success in pop these days when chart placings are irrelevant? New album Badbea is a showcase of his undimmed talents and a glittering testament to his refusal to give up. I spoke on the phone with Edwyn and his partner Grace from their home in Helmsdale in the Highlands.

A Girl Like You - Piano Chords/Lyrics
I was striving for something interesting. I practised daily for months and years, chord shapes and such like. None of that pop star rubbish. There is the difficulty with speech: as a side-effect of the two brain haemorrhages which almost killed him in , he sometimes has difficulty with communication. A more benign side effect, though, is his impatience with nostalgia, preferring to focus on the future. Collins soon became the frontman, and brought along a college friend, David McClymont. He was tall and lanky, and he really stood out. It was like they were looking at someone from Mars. Because I looked different. Indeed, when judged by the efforts of their imitators, Orange Juice were often described as fey.
