If Wilkie Collins were alive today, he would undoubtedly be in Hollywood, demanding hefty fees for screenplays that cater to a lateth-century taste for glossy luridness. As it was, Collins was a British lawyer who spent most of his time writing novels that catered to 19th-century popular tastes and often appeared serially in a magazine run by his friend Charles Dickens.

Two of Collins's works are well remembered today and well represented this season on ''Masterpiece Theater. Then in March, viewers in most parts of the country saw an ambitiously unsettling version of ''The Woman in White,'' which fits nicely into the latter-day genre of psychological thriller. Viewers of Channel 13 in New York can watch it tomorrow night at In the case of ''The Woman in White,'' it's particularly important not to give away just who's good and who's bad, and in what degree.

Suffice it here to present the principals and hint at a tale that's genuinely Gothic but also surprisingly contemporary in the style of its malevolence. Laura, the inheritor of a fortune, is engaged to Sir Percival Glyde James Wilby , who the cynical Marian believes is a little too perfect. Walter Hartright Andrew Lincoln , a gifted and penniless young artist, is hired to teach the sisters to draw and, in falling for Laura, senses that the sisters are in peril.

And Anne Catherick Susan Vidler , an addled woman dressed in white, emerges from the surrounding forest from time to time and utters haunting, nonsensical sentences about the Fairlie and Glyde families' past. In the production notes for ''The Woman in White,'' the director, Tim Fywell, says that he was inspired not only by the Collins novel but also by ''the kind of paranoid dreamlike world of Roman Polanski's 'Rosemary's Baby. Fywell's comment is a good indication of how dangerously close this ''Woman in White'' comes to crossing over into garish melodrama.

What saves it, for the most part, is a disciplined presentation of the various sinister plot threads and, above all, the control of its gifted cast. For devotees of imported British television, it's worth tuning in simply to savor an intermittent assortment of small mesmerizing turns by Mr. Richardson and Mr.

More important, however, is the almost ruthlessly dignified performance of Ms. Fitzgerald ''Brassed Off,'' ''The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill but Came Down a Mountain'' as Marian, who persists in trying to understand and avenge the appalling cruelty to which she and her sister are subjected primarily because they are women.

Although this ''Woman in White'' has the requisite carefully designed period costumes and stately English locations, the novel on which it is based, in literary terms, is not exactly Jane Austen territory. But Ms. Fitzgerald helps the whole enterprise by proceeding as if it were. David M. View on timesmachine. TimesMachine is an exclusive benefit for home delivery and digital subscribers.

The BBC has gone even further back than Agatha Christie for its new Sunday night literary adaptation — and seems to have learnt a few lessons in the process. Instead, it stuck to the business of retelling a story which is one of the great Gothic mystery thrillers. But on the way home, he encounters the Woman of the title Olivia Vinall — distressed and fearful, but rambling about the house where he is to be employed.
