Thomas Rhett 's 'Make Me Wanna' brings a fun and funky new sound from a relative newcomer who is quickly solidifying himself as a country mainstay. It's the fifth single off Rhett's debut album, 'It Goes Like This,' and with a smooth jazz vibe, 'Make Me Wanna' is like nothing else currently on country radio. Thematically, 'Make Me Wanna' fits comfortably in classic country music. But while the lyrics may sound a bit too much like what's already out there, the melody makes up for it ten times over. The Bee Gees-inspired tune features staccato drum and piano undertones that echo famous disco hits like ' Stayin Alive ,' but with a perfect blend of twangy guitars to keep the song's sound just true enough for any pure country fan. Add to that Rhett's unmistakably solid voice, and you've got a new single that will fit just as well in a '70s disco club as a Nashville honky tonk.

I love listening to music. To me, music is a very powerful way to express and elicit emotions. It is wonderful to find a song that can elicit just the right emotion for the mood I am in. Songs can be a source of comfort, motivation, or inspiration. An artist would never release a song hoping it would be a flop. So why are there so many flops? I have always been a fan of country music, and recently I have been listening to a lot of music by the artist Thomas Rhett.

Many of his songs play constantly on the radio even though they were released years ago. However, as I searched for more of his music, I found that he has several songs that have never had very much success. At first listen, I was baffled.

To me, they seemed every bit as good as his most popular songs. I narrowed my query down to four songs that have similar topics. Two are very popular, and two are not. Those are very large differences! At first listen, all of these songs are similar and should have a fairly similar amount of popularity. Thomas Rhett is a very well known artist and the majority of his songs are usually quite successful.

I will be doing an in-depth analysis to discover the reason for the differing amounts of popularity between the four songs. I will mainly be doing a straight script analysis of the two songs, specifically focusing on the cause, goal, and result. A script analysis is performed by looking at two or more scripts and analyzing the elements therein.

Script has a specific definition when linguistically analyzing. Every script is made up of text, which is defined as two or more sentences shared by two or more language users. These sentences are organized in the human mind as a story-like construction, which is generally referred to as a script. Every script is made up of seven possible script elements. They are as follows:. These script element categories can also be applied to other analysis tools in discourse analysis, like determining personality types, discovering how a writer feels about what he or she is writing, and learning what feelings a script elicits for the audience.

Examples of these other analysis tools will be discussed later in the paper. At the heart of every good script is a convincing question that needs to be answered. Sometimes, the question is obvious to the audience. Other times it is not. If the resolution to the question is obvious, the audience will have no desire to read or listen to the script.

If there is no convincing question, there is no story. An example of this happens when the writer of a song describes an unchanging STATE without a question. However, in music that is not the case. The question is left hanging a little bit.

The exception to this rule would be a ballad, which is basically a full story put to music. This is so the listener will want to listen to that song again and again. The lyrics and music should create an emotional dissonance that is not completely resolved, which is why the music itself is also important. It tells its own story apart from, but in harmony with, the lyrics. For that reason, I will also be analyzing the lyrics, vocals, background music to determine their scripts and the emotions they evoke.

I will do so by examining the voice , or the raw emotions elicited by the script or music itself a. The voice and tone of the lyrics, the vocals, and the background music can be analyzed by referencing the following chart:. The seven major voices that a script can have are as follows:.

Each of these voices elicits a different emotion in the listener. A GOAL voice can cause the listener to experience feelings of restfulness, peace, or boredom. The emotions a person feels when reading a script or listening to music depend on a variety of other factors as well, for instance their personality type which correlates with the seven elements of discourse analysis as well , their mood, their background, and their personal preferences.

One of the best nights that I've had, no doubt. Between the bottle of wine and the look in your eyes and the Marvin Gaye. Then we danced in the dark under September stars in the pourin' rain. That all I need in this life is your crazy love. On this side of the Mississippi River, baby. You're my infinity, no end to you and me. Come hell, fire, or rain, baby, nothin' can change it.

Ooh, when the good Lord calls me home and this life is through. I may be six feet deep, but I'll still be lovin' you. Can't take diamonds, can't take gold. But I'll take your love with me when I go. Will Thomas Rhett die a happy man? Will Thomas Rhett get to see the northern lights or the Eiffel tower at night?

He says he could die a happy man if he can be with his wife forever, but he still wants to do all those other things. The listener can empathize strongly with his dilemma. It draws a person into the song because of the sentiment behind it and because it is a real dilemma. All he needs in this life is her crazy love, but he also wants all of those other things- seeing the Eiffel tower at night and the northern lights. The GOAL is that he will die a happy man with his hand in her hand, but will he actually be happy if he never gets to do all of the other things he wants to do?

There is also a minor question he brings up that is not very convincing. Everyone is going to die. The only question is when, but that is not a convincing enough CAUSE to create a question in the mind of the listener. For the context of the song, it does not matter when he dies. Those two desires evoke a real question in the mind of the audience because they are valid questions.

Cruisin' down some old back road. Now baby don't you look at me that way. Cause you make me want to. Girl you make me wanna. The question that is raised by the CAUSE is this- will Thomas Rhett pull over and express his feelings for her, or will they just keep driving around?

The listener never finds out if he actually does pull his truck over, which makes the question real and keeps the audience interested. In fact, the entire song is a bit messy and it is difficult to pinpoint the various script elements. I figured out, however, that the following are the main script elements of the song:. Nobody quite like you.

You're my always and forever, girl. However, these script elements are very obscure in the lyrics of the song. They are each sung only once. For example, here is the chorus of the song, which is repeated three times:. And I can't believe you gave your sweet heart to me. Oh, yeah, you gave your sweet heart to me.

The GOAL , which was difficult to pick out from all of the other lyrics, is for her to know how he feels- that she will always be his. The song makes it obvious that they love each other. This song is a little strange because the final line of the song contradicts the rest of lyrics, particularly the STATE. It has a positive tone and restful voice. There is not a lot of contrast in the song. There is a guitar rhythm in the background that is constant, but over the top there is a vocal variation that is very broad.

That keeps the song interesting and draws the audience in. It gives the lyrics a slight- very slight- negative tone that contrasts with the restful voice of the lyrics and the music. There is also a consistent pattern in the song. The resolution between the lyrical and musical patterns comes towards the end of the song:.

I don't need no vacation, no fancy destination. The resolution still leaves the question open, but gives the listener a little bit more of a restful feeling about the song. This, in addition to the lack of question in the lyrics, may be why people are turned off from the song. It starts off in a very catchy way that draws the listener in, and the variety of the song continues to keep the listener hooked.

The amused voice and entertained tone mean that this song has a STATE voice, in the category of variety. Overall, the lyrics and music have the same voice and tone, making it a song that is easy to listen to and remember.

In "Make Me Wanna" Thomas Rhett is driving down some back roads with his girl, but just looking at her makes him wanna "Pull this truck to the side of the road, slide on over, let me hold you close, and tell you everything I'm thinking. Although the lyrics seem to point toward the current unsettling times, Rhett discussed why he put out the song a year after he wrote it in a recent Instagram Live. This song was really just about being a light in a dark place; being an encouragement to people," he said last month. I hope it puts a smile on your face in this crazy, crazy time. In a time full of war, be peace In a time full of doubt, just believe Yeah, there ain't that much difference between you and me In a time full of war, be peace. In a world full of hate, be a light When you do somebody wrong, make it right Don't hide in the dark, you were born to shine In a world full of hate, be a light La-la-la, la, la, la, la.
